In addition to producing digestive secretions, the liver and the pancreas have other important functions. For example, the endocrine pancreas supplies the insulin and glucagon needed in cell metabolism, whereas the liver synthesizes glucose, plasma proteins, and blood clotting factors and is responsible for the degradation and elimination of drugs and hormones, among other functions. This chapter focuses on functions and disorders of the liver, the biliary tract and gallbladder, and the exocrine pancreas.

Role of hepatobiliary scintigraphy in bile leak diangnosis [Persian]

Hepatobiliary scintigraphy is a sensitive method for intra & extera hepatic bile leak diagnosis. Bile lead may be seen after hepatobiliary surgery, trauma, inflammatory disease or malignant neoplasms. Although sonography and CT scanning are useful for diagnosis of peritoneal or perihepatic fluid, they cannot prove bile ascites. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy with Tc-99m-IDA agents is a physio...

Non-Invasive Diagnostic Methods for Differentiation of Biliary Atresia from Neonatal Hepatitis in Upper Egypt

Background Cholestatic jaundice in infancy is always pathologic and mainly caused by biliary atresia (BA), and neonatal hepatitis (NH). The early discrimination of both conditions is critical for the outcome of BA. We aimed to assess different non-invasive diagnostic tools in differentiating BA from NH. Materials and Methods Forty infants (25 boys, 15 girls) with cholestatic jaundice and final...

Dual-radionuclide simultaneous gastric emptying and bile transit study after gastric surgery with double-tract reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE The physiology of gastrointestinal transfer function after proximal gastrectomy with bypass-tract reconstruction is not well understood. We applied a simultaneous dual-radionuclide method with a hepatobiliary imaging and gastric emptying study to evaluate physiologic alterations occurring after surgery. METHODS Nineteen patients with early gastric cancer, including 9 preoperative co...

Hepatobiliary diseases in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treated with non highly active anti-retroviral therapy: frequency and clinical manifestations

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of hepatobiliary diseases and the clinical manifestations in patients with HIV treated with non highly active anti-retroviral therapy. Methods: Seven hundred clinical records of patients with HIV infection who entered the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y de la Nutrición Salvador Zubirán from January 1987 to December 1996 were reviewed. All patients w...

Application of ursodeoxycholic acid in hepatobiliary scintigraphy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia: Comparison with phenobarbital

Introduction: Early differentiation of biliary atresia from neonatal hepatitis is of utmost importance, since on time surgery of biliary atresia significantly improves the outcome. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy is an integral part of diagnosis work-up of these patients; however its specificity for diagnosis of biliary atresia is suboptimal. In this study we evaluated t...

Fatty acid composition of lipoprotein lipids in hepatobiliary diseases.

Liver damage and alterations in the exocrine function of the gland lead to a profound alteration of the plasma lipoprotein profile. To determine whether hepatic disease results in changes in the lipoprotein fatty acid composition, i.e. to determine whether liver function influences the homeostasis of complex lipids in plasma, we studied the fatty acid profile of lipids from VLDL, LDL and HDL, a...
